Health in Pregnancy Grant

Hot on the heels of the research that advised eating junk food whilst pregnant is bad for you, the government is set to announce a 'Health in Pregnancy' grant.

The £200 grant is set to be given in the third trimester, and is hoped by the government to be used for healthy foods to combat the problem of low-birth weight babies, which according to the World Health Organisation is the main determinant in the survival rate of new-borns.

There are no clear guidelines at the moment as to how the spend would be monitored, but the scheme is set to start in 2009.

Details of the Health in Pregnancy are to be announced on Thursday 13th September by the Health Secretary.

Eating for Two?

Eating junk food whilst pregnant and breastfeeding may lead to obese offspring. Can this be true? Well according to an article in the British Journal of Nutrition, it could be.

The research comes from the Royal Veterinary College and was funded by the Wellcome Trust and suggests that pregnant women and breastfeeding women should avoid fatty, sugary and salty foods whilst pregnant.

The study showed that eating large quantities of junk food when pregnant and breastfeeding could impair the normal control of appetite and promotes an exacerbated taste for junk food in offspring. The author Dr Stephanie Bayol said "This could send offspring on the road to obesity and make the task of teaching healthy eating habits in children even more challenging."

NOW at this point it should be noted the research WAS carried out on rats who were fed on a diet of muffins biscuits and sweets BUT the research team believe there could be implications for humans.

The co-author Professor Neil Strickland adds, "Future mothers should be aware that pregnancy and lactation are not the time to over-indulge on fatty-sugary treats on the mis-guided assumption that they are 'eating for two'."

So if you believe the link exists then don't reach for a muffin when you need a quick pick me up - go for something healthier.

Bamboo Nursing Wear Arrives at Everyday Maternity

Bamboo is the hot new fabric, and we have introduced it to our nursing wear section. Bamboo fabric is softer than cotton with a texture similar to silk. It is a naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic fabric and is also quick to absorb moisture, therefore keeping you dry and odour free.

There are also environmental benefits of bamboo. It is a renewable resource as the plant is self replenishing with new shoots growing continuously. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants. The plants require very little water and can survive dry conditions as well as flooding. The crops are also environmentally sound as they do not require pesticides or fertilisers.

Fashion wise, bamboo cotton drapes wonderfully, and is so very soft - ideal for breastfeeding mums who may be suffering from soreness. It is breathable, hypoallergenic and anti-bacterial.

Sorry, we have nothing in stock for your selected item. New products are added regularly, please check again soon.
